Psychology Research Pathways

Psy 5993 Enrichment - Cohort Fall 2023
Pathways Research Enrichment Program -  Fall 2023

The Pathways Program was created as part of the Psychology Department's aim to increase representation in psychology careers. The program is built around Psychology 5993, the course in which students join a lab and help conduct research. There are two components to help people pursue research opportunities in our department and beyond, the Introduction to Research and the Research Enrichment Program.

For people wanting to get started in research, the 1-unit course, Psychology 3960 that is designed to help students with all levels of experience learn more about psychological research and to develop skills that will support their success in future research placements, including PSY 5993. The course covers topics including different career paths in research, preparation of lab application materials, how research projects build off the existing literature, and different expectations that labs may have. In the course, students will be introduced to faculty, labs, and fellow undergraduates conducting research in psychology. The course emphasizes how students from all backgrounds can contribute to research.  The course is offered once per semester, has no prerequisites, and students can enroll in the usual way.

This program is for students enrolled in our directed research course, PSY 5993, to support and enhance their experiences and future plans. The program consists of weekly meetings with a cohort of 10-12 students to provide support, build research-related skills, learn about research-related career opportunities, and present their work. Participation in this program will also include up to $250 in tuition support. Applications for the program are accepted twice a year, and we invite undergraduates who identify with any group underrepresented in psychology research careers to apply to the program . The application only takes a few minutes to complete, and the deadline for our Spring 2024 program is December 15, 2023.

"I would encourage anyone interested in learning more about careers within psychology learning more about the processes that underlie conducting research to apply for the Enrichment Program. It was tremendously useful to participate in panels with a diverse group of graduate students and professionals within the psychology field" Program alum
